Hi Amy,

I'll be honest: I don't really like my
body. Ever since I was a child I was
never the "slim" type.

I think they call it being "big boned."

As I grew older I grew bigger but
unfortunately, not taller. I always
keep saying if I was only a little
bit taller it would be fine.

But that's not the only thing that
bothers me.

It's seeing other people who have
better bodies than me and don't
seem to get big regardless of
what they eat.

Do you have any suggestions as
to how I can have more confidence
with myself and my body without
having to constantly compare
myself with other people?

Anything you can recommend
would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Ellen

************************************************************

Who really likes their own body?

Apparently, not the 89% of us
out there, according to an AOL
Healthy Living poll.

So see, you're not alone.

But I will admit that it's not really
that easy to not hate your body
when you are constantly bombarded
by images of what the "true" body
should be - ultra thin or ultra buff
super models that don't match
99% of the population.

Unfortunately, these images are
so mainstream that we accept it
as fact and suffer because of it.

That's when we start to lose
confidence with our bodies
and our selves.

The thing is body image is how
you see yourself.

People with a poor body image
tend to focus only on the body
parts they dislike and not on
the ones they find acceptable.

And just because you think other
people have better bodies than
you doesn't mean they don't
have their own insecurities.

Being handsome or beautiful
doesn't guarantee a good
body image.

It comes down to how you really
see yourself and it's effects on
your self-esteem.

Your body image and self-esteem
are linked.

It's all about how you see your self
and no matter the compliments
other people give, if you are unhappy
with your image then it won't help
you much.

That is suggestive of low self-esteem.

Let's face it, people come in all
shapes and sizes and there's no
rule saying that your body image
should fit with stereotypes in society.

All you need to do to improve your
body image and the self-esteem
that comes with it is to make
adjustments to the way you
see yourself.

Basically, you have to make sure
you feel healthy. If it means having
to stand from the couch and do
exercises then do it.

*The main point is that you feel
good about yourself.*

How you do it is entirely up to you.

What is important is that you are
motivated once you decide to start
this.

Remember: people handle things
differently. Don't be surprised if
you see people bigger than you
have higher levels of confidence
and self-esteem.

*It's all in the mind...your mind
that is.*

That being said start loving yourself
and getting rid of the things that
are bringing you down.

************************************************************

*Turn off the idiot box*

Otherwise called your television.

Even when I say that I don't mean
stop watching it altogether.

What I am saying is limit your
exposure to those stereotypes
that say you should be this
size or this height to be
considered beautiful.

If you must watch something
keep it safe.

Don't keep watching shows
that increases your self body
dissatisfaction.

I mean let's face it, in the real
world there's no way everyone
that works in one place will all
have blond hair, big breasts,
and a body that is the envy of
99% of women out there, and
the lust of the same percentage
of men - well unless it's the
playboy mansion but that's
another world entirely.

************************************************************

*Stop criticizing yourself*

You are your own worst enemy.

Ask yourself this question: Just
what exactly are you getting out
of examining what you look like
and criticizing it?

If you're looking at yourself in the
mirror, criticizing yourself AND
then putting down an action plan
on how you will do something
about it then that's ok.

In fact that is probably a good thing.

However, if you're just criticizing
yourself just for the sake of criticizing
yourself then you have a problem.

Remember what I said earlier, it's
all about how you see yourself.

If you already see yourself as losing
even before the battle starts then
you've already lost.

Instead of criticizing the parts you
don't like why not focus on those
you do like and build from there.

************************************************************

*Share*

Like I said you are not alone in
this endeavor. There are people
out there that are willing to be
part of your support group.

There's your family and friends.
Start with them.

Discuss with them your concerns
and what you would like help on.

They can become your very own
cheer-leading group so you get
motivated.

If you don't feel like sharing with
your family and friends then seek
professional assistance.

************************************************************

When all is said and done, what
is important is that you love
yourself and your whole body -
warts, zits, love handles and all.

Over focusing on your negative
aspects will just hurt your self-
esteem and thus your confidence.

Recognize what you do have in
terms of strengths and/or talents.

Use that as a springboard for
building up yourself.

Tell yourself that you love yourself
once a day.

You'll be surprised at how much it
can give you the boost you need
to face the world.

Let me be part of your journey.
My guide will show you how you
can truly define yourself despite
what others say about you.

See how it can work for you here.

*Because If you don't believe
in yourself as someone worthy
of love, respect and happiness,
then who else will?*

To your happiness,

Amy Twain
