**********************************************************************
There's much to be said about leadership.
Rules, pointers, styles, and biographies of
inspiring leaders throughout world history -
leadership is one of the most written about
subject out there.
Out of all this, what do we really know about
leadership?
**********************************************************************
Much like ice cream, leaders, and thus
leadership styles, come in different flavors.
There are many different types of leaders
and you will probably, if you haven't done
so yet, encounter more than one type in
your lifetime.
I mean, think back when you were in different
groups with different leaders. Didn't each
one have a different way of leading your
group.
Some may have been very authoritative,
unwilling to compromise and doing all the
planning and work.
Then there are the authoritative ones who
were visionaries and willing to delegate.
Still others who were more democratic and
willing to listen and consult with the members.
And so on and so forth.
Formal leaders are those we elect into those
leadership positions such as members of
congress or the presidency, the head of the
local chapter of an organization, or something
as basic as your neighborhood association.
Even when you were in school, you chose
your class president (where applicable) or
in group work your group leader.
Then there are Informal leaders or leaders
by virtue of their wisdom and experience
such as in the case of the elders of a tribe,
or our grandparents or by virtue of their expertise
and contribution on a given field.
Both formal and informal leaders practice
a combination of leadership styles ranging
from authoritative, participative, delegative,
exploitative, benevolent, consultative, participative,
visionary, coaching, affiliative, democratic,
pace-setting, and commanding.
**********************************************************************
While it can be said that some people are
born to be leadership, for the most part
leaders, and thus leadership is learned
and created.
Anyone can learn how to become a leader
and hone their leadership abilities.
You can gain knowledge on leadership theories
and skills from leadership seminars, workshops,
and conferences.
By interacting daily with people you can
get the opportunity to observe and practice
the leadership theories you've learned.
At the same time you get to see how the
leaders in your circle ply their trade so to
speak.
Just remember that you don't become a
leader in one day. Nor do you stop learning
after becoming one.
Being a leader means a life-long learning
process on leadership since each day can
bring new experiences that can put your
leadership skills to the test.
**********************************************************************
The best way to develop leadership qualities
is to apply it to your own life, that is to say
leadership and becoming a leader starts
with you.
Keep in mind that your credibility as a leader
depends on your actions be it within your
family, your circle of friends, or your co-workers.
And just because you're a leader doesn't
necessarily mean the burden is yours.
A leader is a leader because others recognize
him or her as the leader.
Thus, being a leader is as much the responsibility
of the members of the group or team who
chose the leader as it is of the person chosen
to be the leader
A leader still belongs to the group and as
leader just gets added responsibility to the
responsibilities he or she already has as
a group or team member.
Effective leadership requires each members
to do their share of work.
Trust must be built between members and
the only way to build trust is to act accordingly.
When mutual respect exists, trust is fostered
and confidence is built resulting in a more
effective group or team.
**********************************************************************
The important thing about being a leader
and about leadership is that what works
in one scenario may not necessarily work
in another.
By that I mean the American leadership
format may not work in the African or
Asian context.
To put it on a more basic level, being a
leader in the classroom is quite different
than being a leader of a team at a company.
Not only is the culture different but the level
of experience, as well as the consequences
are different.
Thus the leadership style required is also
different.
That's why you will see leaders who are
good in one setting become totally worthless
when brought in for a different setting.
The good ones adapt and succeed. Those
that can't fail or do a haphazard job of it.
