Work And Play Well With Your Co-Workers
Handle the stress of work and
be a happy worker.
Make work as fun as playing
your favorite sport or having
a picnic.
Enjoy work starting now.
Make your work seem like a
paradise and lessen the stress.
************************************************************
Regardless of where you work,
there will always be people
around you.
These people are your co-
workers.
Like it or not they are very
important.
Why?
Because they can make or
break your success at the
office or wherever it may
be.
It doesn't matter what your
success and failures were
before - if you can't work with
your current co-workers, all
those awards and successes
mean nothing because you
won't be able to finish your work.
Having effective working
relationships with your co-
workers is a cornerstone
for success and satisfaction
with your job and your career.
Let's face it - you are more likely
to spend more time with your
co-workers than you do
your family.
Thus, it is good if you know
how to play nice with them
so you can move on and up.
Basically, you can't live with
your them and you certainly
can't live without them.
So how do you do it?
Well first be genuine with
your co-workers.
A simple greeting in the morning
goes a long way in developing
trust and friendships that can
be useful later.
And no inter-office politics. Let
the people in upper management
do office politics.
It's not in your job description
so why bother doing it.
It's counterproductive and can
have negative repercussions.
Remember, the person you're
stabbing in the back right
now or making fun of right
now may be the person
that will become your boss
in the future.
There is a saying: "Don't
burn your bridges behind
you" because you never
know when you need to
cross back.
Treat your co-workers as
both suppliers and as
customers.
Why do I say that. Well it can
happen that in a project you
will need the finished product
of a co-worker before you are
able to start your own part
of the project.
By treating them as a supplier
you basically treat them in
such a way as to make them
feel connected with you.
When that happens they can
often be amendable to things
that they typically won't do.
And they may also go out of
their way to give you priority
so you can do your end of
the project.
In business, especially in
retail, keeping your supplier
happy is the best way to
ensure that you keep up
and running.
At the same time you need
to treat them as you would
a customer.
This is especially true if the
situation is the reverse of the
one above where this time
your co-worker is the one
waiting for your output so
they can start their own work.
It's the golden rule: "Do unto
others how you would like
others to do unto you."
Think of it this way. At some
point in your stay you will
become both a customer
and a supplier.
Isn't it best if you get the
most from either position
so you can continue to go
up the career ladder?
Be a team player. This may
be a cliche but there is no "I"
in team.
That means you don't sacrifice
a team member just to save
your ass.
If the team fails in accomplishing
its goal the blame is with the
team, not with one individual.
If you're the leader don't point
fingers. The best way is to
figure out what went wrong
and offer solutions to fix it.
At the same time keep your
commitments. Be active in
your participation and don't
be a wet blanket.
Keep the lines of communication
open. That being said make
sure you listen when something
is being communicated.
Keeping communications
open is useless if there's
no one listening.
And just respect your co-workers
as you would like to be
respected.
By doing these things that I
have mentioned, and then
some, you will play well
with others and develop
effective work relationships.
Your co-workers will value
you as a colleague and the
best part is your bosses will
see that you play on the right
team so will give you more
responsibility which is one
step closer to going up the
career ladder.
You'll be able to accomplish
your work goals, and you may
even experience fun, recognition,
and personal motivation.
Just don't forget to give credit
where credit is due.
You didn't get to where you
are just by yourself.
If your co-workers helped then
say so. You'll be amazed on
what a simple gesture like that
can do.
