“I can’t find my Muse!” my client once complained when she whined about how she finds it difficult to concentrate, let alone have something to write about, as she was constantly confronted with a blank stare of the white space—on the monitor. She’s a writer by profession and most writers have one time or another been struck by writer’s block.
Well, I also write my blogs, and I can definitely relate. But if you want to improve writing skills, you shouldn’t wait for your Muse or any “inspiration” to let you activate your creative juices, so to speak. Okay, I know that it’s really helpful and yes, more inspiring to write when you have your “Muse” around.

But not all the time can we depend on it, right? What if you got a deadline coming up and you got no choice but to act on that blog, novel, manuscript etc? That’s why you need to brush on your writing skills and acquire some techniques on your own to get you going.
Writing skills can be enhanced through your voracious reading. Yes, read, read and read more. For what will you write for if you don’t know what to write and you’re not exposed to other infos and wisdom? And when you read, read and digest a little bit of everything—and not just on any particular field.
You got to make yourself literary varied. Be bold, be brave and be daring! If for example, you’re an author for romance novels, it’s given that you’ll read more about works of other famous romantic authors, right? Well, in a way yes, improving your writing skills may help you in this way, as you may want to gather some ideas and styles from your influences.
But be a wide reader as well and explore other avenues in your reading. In that way, you can gather and be acclimated to other styles of other authors. So granted if you’re into fantasy Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings books, you might as well try Anne Rice vampire novels, since they belong to the same ‘genre’ as well.
Or try anything you can get your hands on—be adventurous! Writing skills is also about practicing writing. What good is there if you only keep on reading, but you can’t incorporate the ideas and styles of the stuff that you read? And have your pen and paper (or in this day and age, your laptop, Mac, PCs) in handy.
Just write down whatever the thing or anything that comes into your creative mind. Who knows, that a light bulb may spark above your artistic head and a Eureka moment may emerge while doing some tedious chores---like cleaning your house.
