Effective communication is needed not only to relay the message successfully, but also to build
relationships, to share information, not to be misunderstood, etc.

Here are some tips on how to develop effective communication skills:

1) Recognize the ideas, thoughts, and feelings first. Effective communication is about speaking, listening, and body language. When someone is talking, show your interest by listening carefully, and using nods, comments and some "uh-huhs" to show that you acknowledge the speaker’s thoughts and that you’re a good listener.

2) Try asking open-ended questions. If ever you get distracted or get lost in a conversation, ask for interpretation of what’s being talked about. Asking open-ended questions is helpful in communicating. Ask questions with "how", "describe" "please explain further", or "why".

3) Paraphrase it. Paraphrasing, or reflection, is repeating what the speaker has said in your own words, sans adding anything not there in what’s being said. This technique clarifies the flow of communication more and allows the other party know that you’re trying to comprehend what’s being talked about.

4) Offer your own opinion. But first, pause for a moment and approach with caution. Just don’t push it if the speaker is not open-minded to it.

All in all effective communication is about continuously developing and keep practicing your dialogue skills by listening more and observe what happens--and talking less. About the author. Okay, so you may have a great idea; but how to express and convey it across is the tricky part. Well, why don’t you just simplify it and say what you want? You don’t need lots of unnecessary words lest you may come across as boastful or too attention-seeker. Or, you don’t wish to annoy people with gibberish.

<span style="font-weight: bold;">So how do you tone down your word count? First of all,<span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"> too much words create a lot of misunderstandings. Yes, I’ve been there; so, to avoid confusion and misunderstanding, just say what you want and stop right there--before you might utter some unintentional harsh words.

You know what’s another reason for keeping it simple? Well, <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">you don’t want to bore your audience to death. Don’t even think that what may be interesting for you may be interesting for others too. Be aware of the what you are saying and how your audience is reacting.

If you say what you want and keep it short and sweet,<span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"> it makes you less self-conscious and more about expressing your point across. The trick here is to keep it clear and simple and concentrate on the person you’re talking to and not so much about yourself.

In addition to this, if you say what you want as simply as you can, <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">you become more involved and in tune with the whole conversation and you’re enthusiastic in what you’re talking about.

Great communication is about the other person and how you’ll be able to effectively convey your message across.

About the author. Mon, 7 Sep 2009 07:43:01 +0200 Brush Up On Your Decision Making Skills http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/business-decision-making http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/business-decision-making You know what’s that important one thing that distinctly separates us humans from the rest of the species of mankind? You guessed it right—our minds. Yes, ever since evolution set in, the Earth has bestowed us the gift of knowledge and wisdom. So it’s only fitting that we utilize this wonderful gift to its maximum potential. And one thing to do this is to hone our decision making skills. As humans, we’re more or less bombarded with a lot of choices and we have to make decisions (especially when it comes to business decision making), so we have to overcome some intrinsic faults in decision making. Oh yeah, our mind—with all its intellectual capacities, is no stranger to making awkward solutions to certain problems. Here are some techniques and styles on how to prevent faulty decision making. Firstly, if you got to make some important decisions, make sure you’re relaxed, so that you can focus on the problem and analyze all the possible alternatives before coming up to a final decision. To fortify on your solid decision making, apply some contingency plans. Let’s say, instead of abstract goals like, “be healthier”, or “be kinder”, why not try to be more specific like, “try eating more veggies now and ditch the junk food” and “visit an orphanage today” is more concrete. Envision that your decision would be checked by others. If we think that somebody else is checking on us, we make more effort in coming up with a better decision. Okay, granted that no one is checking out on you, just picture their reaction if indeed they did—will you be proud of what you did? Also, bear in mind that not all decisions are equal. Not all decisions call for demanding attention; there are times that it’s better to simply pick and be over it. So, the technique is in knowing which is which—your formidable indications are the things you’ve experienced in the past. When making decisions, be sure that you distance yourself from whatever thoughts and especially emotions which revolve around you at that moment. If you can’t think clearly this time, it’s better to sleep on it…for now. Weighty decisions are far better made if done after a good night’s sleep. It would even help if you ponder about how this conclusion will affect you and your future. Most of all, be objective and rational. Weight the pros and cons carefully before making that ultimate move. You don’t want to let your personal feelings cloud your judgment. About the author. Fri, 27 Mar 2009 07:12:39 +0100 Get A Load Of These Effective Communication Techniques http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/effective-communication-techniques http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/effective-communication-techniques If you want to be successful in your chosen careers, climb the corporate ladder, benefit from a harmonious working atmosphere, or have your project proposals approved, then it’s high time to spruce up your influencing and communication techniques. Even the mere demeanor of trying to exude an aura of being friendly and approachable at work could elevate to your improvement. And the whole rationale behind this is: people like other people who they identify to be like them also. Effective communication techniques may not always let you be able to enable others to buy into your entire concepts, however when you correspond well, you could positively influence others to let them willingly listen to you at the onset. This can be interpreted as having the capacity to persuade other individuals. Take note that in most companies and workplaces, varied personalities abound here and there and they come from different backgrounds. Therefore, if you are perceived to be one of the friendly people who communicate very well with almost everybody and not just a selected few, then others would unsurprisingly regard particular qualities and character with you. It also means that increasing friendly connections and enhancing communication techniques at work might not come very easily, yet it’s certainly worth all the efforts to practice how to convey an atmosphere of accessibility. Communication techniques also include the importance of being well-groomed, appreciating others and also remembering names. Research explains that good-looking persons are usually thought of as being friendly, can be more trusted or relied on, and smarter. So making the most of your physical looks could really help in enhancing other people’s discernment or opinion of you. That’s why it’s very important to bear in mind that when it comes to communication techniques, non-verbal communication is also as essential. When you talk to everyone (regardless of rank or position in the office), it can be seen as being friendly and making other people feel they’re important. And it’s a plus factor when you use their first names. However, if you keep on forgetting people’s names, then you might try considering word associations or how about striving to listen better the next time you’re introduced for the first time; repeating the person’s name after you heard it also helps. If you can, assist your colleagues to complete their tasks to catch a deadline or even offer advice (if they need it) for their personal or career goals. This will enable trust to be developed and it benefits both ways. It’s nice to play the Good Samaritan once in a while; if you help others, they would help you in return. If you are the unsure, shy and the not so confident kind, just keep on practicing your communication techniques. You may think about looking for a mentor or coach or you may try joining a workshop to hone your skills. Consequently, several business operations are dependent on effective communication techniques, clear communication lines and being perceived as a friendly and reliable person to help you propel your way to success. Fri, 27 Feb 2009 09:05:46 +0100 It’s About Time To Master Those Listening Skills http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/good-listening-skills http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/good-listening-skills Right from the very start since we were kids, we’ve already been taught and trained the value and importance of listening skills. It’s already a well-known fact that acquiring good listening skills is a must-have in order to strengthen and enhance our communication. Via listening, we get to learn many things and build our communication skills. The mere act of listening can go a long way. Even as a baby, you already learned how to speak or utter a few words thru listening. Thus, we learn so many things we never knew before when we listen. Just by knowing the basics of listening skills, it can boost our communication skills. And now, there are four main points on how to acquire good listening skills and improving them when it comes to communicating well with other people. 1. The first one is to concentrate on the person talking. Of course, we are talking about basic courtesy here. If you’re the one talking, you certainly want your listener’s full and undivided attention, right? And even if you’re somewhat sidetracked, you will be at risk of misunderstanding the topic or even miss anything what the speaker is trying to tell you. And it also means that when you pay attention to someone, you don’t mind some other tasks during a conversation. Also, stop glancing over your shoulder or at the entire room; it may be misconstrued as being not interested at all. 2. Then, another sign of showing that you listened to the speaker is when you repeat some final parts of what somebody has told you. If something is not clear with you, then say so. In this manner, it can be addressed immediately by the speaker. 3. Also, another way of enhancing your listening skills is by not distracting or interrupting the person talking. Interrupting someone while speaking may be perceived as you’re more concerned and absorbed in your own thoughts rather than other people’s. Instead, you must first hear what the other party has to say and wait for him to finish before butting in to express your own thoughts and opinions. And it’s impolite to break in just like that, as the speaker might forget what he’s about to say. 4. Finally, in order to upgrade your listening skills, make use of the power of body language. It would also enable you to listen better and not just show that you’re interested to listen. Okay for example, if you keep that eye contact (just don’t stare too hard, please), you may be less distracted, or not distracted at all that easily. Plus, if you move in a little closer, you could hear better. And one more thing though, enough with the being restless and getting fidgety. It can only signal a lack of interest or simply being bored--okay, stop yawning now. So there you have it—those tips for improving your listening skills. Just put yourself in the shoes of the speaker—what do you want with your listeners? Of course you want someone attentive, not fidgety, not easily distracted by other stuff and does not interrupt you while you talk. Try these tips above and you’re on your way to being a good listener. About the author. Amy Twain is a successful Self Improvement Coach who has been helping and coaching individuals for many years. Fri, 30 Jan 2009 02:12:16 +0100 Try These Best Teaching Techniques Now! http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/teaching-techniques http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/teaching-techniques Sometimes, there are teachers out there who may be flooded with tons and tons of guidelines, advice, theories and teaching techniques and styles to be successful in their chosen field. But for those aspiring teachers, or those already teaching as their profession, just bear in mind that you have to be comfortable with your own style of teaching—since it’s your class, your students and you involved. Different teachers got their own teaching techniques, and not all methods may be comfortable with yours or may apply to you. To each his own, as they say. Hence, you can always observe some of your colleagues’ styles or teaching techniques and decide on your own which one really works best for you. Here I will share with you some of the significant teaching techniques which I gathered from my teacher friends and based from what I have read also. 1. Try motivating and support your students to aspire and establish some goals for themselves and in your own way help them to attain their dreams and then move on to another set of new goals and ambitions. 2. Get to know your students well--build and maintain a sense of bonding with them so that they will feel at ease with you; it can actually work both ways. Though you must have varied and dissimilar expectations from your learners, a good and healthy relationship will ensure a harmonious environment conducive to education and learning. 3. By the way, Classroom Management is one of the teaching techniques that’s widely deemed as the most vital in building a helpful learning atmosphere in making sure that every school day is not just informative, but also enjoyable. Not to mention that your lessons that you impart on your learners would be absorbed by them. Classroom Management envelops a myriad of subjects from behavior management to classroom discipline to the rules inside the classroom to techniques in communicating—and that includes both non-verbal and verbal communication. 4. Also very critical is the teacher-parent connection. Bear in mind that your students’ parents are accountable and answerable to their kids, themselves and to you also. So always remember to be constantly well-informed, easy to talk to, tactful and professional—even if the parents will more likely to develop friendship with you, too. 5. If you want a successful school year, then a dynamic teacher-student bond or relationship will work wonders. Educators and mentors who build and develop a favorable studying milieu and express that they care and are concerned about their pupils; they also have a tendency to have their students reciprocate and show respect and good manners to them and also to others. 6. Of course, not to forget the most essential thing factor to remember here is still to enjoy whatever you do. Maintaining that passion in your job is always what matters at the end of the day. Try looking at your job not just as something which pays your bills and keeps you alive, but also think that through your teaching and your teaching techniques, many people are learning new things, and that knowledge is made for sharing. Tue, 9 Dec 2008 04:21:55 +0100 Sharpen Those Problem Solving Skills Now http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/problem-solving http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/problem-solving Why is it that some individuals lack the problem solving faculties and abilities that others innately have? It’s true that there are several people who possess that negative “ifs and buts” mindset which does not improve their problem solving skills at all. Pessimistic and unfavorable self image might cause an individual to think that his methods or techniques will not be accepted by other people or they assume that they would certainly fail. In most instances, a person might be too unsure or hesitant to try and dare solving some problems due to feelings of incompetence or being inadequate (thinking they’re not good enough)—which are mostly imagined anyway. Certain emotions such as bitterness, self pity, anger, depression, anxiety, and guilt hamper effective problem solving. The person who lacks ingenuity, creativity, resourcefulness and the inability to think way out of the box would also have a tough time in problem solving. Fatigue, extreme pressure, work hassles and stress are great factors to anybody’s difficulty or inability to get over previous problems triumphantly. There are several moments when we really take ourselves very seriously, so often we forget the child in us which could create some awesome inventive styles and methods out of some challenging and thorny issues. Therefore, someone taking a shot at any problem solving must have an open mind, must be flexible and he should be open to various possibilities and should possess a positive attitude regarding their own capacities in solving their own challenges. It is just very inevitable that we all face or encounter problems and challenges as we go through life. If ever we come across these barriers, we actually have two alternatives—either we could view it as a challenge to dare us, (a challenge on which it will help us grow and mature) or just keep on disregarding the problem altogether and merely hoping that it will simply take care of itself and leave it all behind. One can absolutely utilize these skills and techniques for a myriad of tasks and situations whether in dealing with one’s partner/spouse or kids, and most especially in your jobs. Primary Steps in Effective Problem Solving. First and foremost, define your dilemma briefly and clearly. Identify the nature and scope of the problem and the underlying effect it would have on your relationships, career or whatever the case may be. Each setback has their negative and positive features; explain these enabling and disabling features. Then, create your list of probable answers and resolutions and rank them according to their chances of success and effectiveness. Get rid of any doubts, or feelings of insecurity or misgivings that might lurk in you—this is really essential to the problem solving procedure. Foster and cultivate all alternatives, ideas and options and brainstorm to the max! If possible, collect help from other people to assist you. So when you have eventually settled and decided on a particular course of action, persist and pursue it single mindedly and whole heartedly till you succeed till the very end. About the author. Thu, 20 Nov 2008 08:54:41 +0100 Enhancing Mind Power To Its Maximum http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/mind-power http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/mind-power “Whatever your mind could conceive and believe, you can achieve, as Napoleon Hill stated. The human mind brings to reality if only one knows how to use it. Anybody could create and develop reality whenever one discovers steps in enhancing mind power. If we all try to ‘think and grow rich’, all the nourishing changes and internalization are processes in improving one’s mind power. Just fall short of a single step would certainly delay the entire process, but that is not to say that reality won’t come true—it’s just that the road would be quite tougher and rougher. Our brain can be likened to a garden. You could opt to grow your garden with lovely flowers or allow yourself or other people to plant and grow weeds in it. Nurturing is a procedure to uproot those weeds when it begins to grow. Reading some strengthening quotes and listening to some motivational and inspirational tapes would keep reinforcing your belief and your foundation. Your empowering beliefs and values would stop anxiety, doubts and fear. Without doubt and fear, the mind would be performing at maximum performance. With renewed fire power, you are then braced with an optimistic mindset towards new challenges in life. Enhancing mind power would help elevate one’s self esteem. The eternal optimist or positive thinker feels the intangible, sees the invisible and accomplishes the unthinkable. Focus becomes the ultimate power and strength. Cluttering thoughts are distractions which are synonymous to lack of direction and goals. Enhancing one’s mind power would help one to master their mind and eventually, master their life. A person’s skill and ability to change, the capacity of acceptance and the strength and power of letting go are just a series of traits and qualities in improving one’s mind power. Many of us harbor on fear and the past, which lead us to keep on moving around it, inevitably submerged and drown into it, and blind us to even let us recognize and identify the golden path to success. Embracing the changes that take place in our lives are the biggest challenges we have to face. Your power and acceptance to change easily would generate quick progress towards your creation to reality. If you think about it, new lessons in life, adjusting and accepting new modifications are always higher steps to climbing to your success ladders. You would welcome no failures and take unforeseen events as mere life’s lessons to be learned. Your power and strength to let go of the past would allow you to release everything—good and bad and move on with your life. Now you could see and anticipate your future with a clear and brand new learning space. Affirmations and visualizations also are the most typical procedures to hold our dreams and aspirations. A process is much required to perform these processes with commitment and consistency—simply put, repetition is the factor or key to its success. Then, there’s also guided meditation—which could be an empowering step to reinforce and advance your visualization. About the author. Mon, 10 Nov 2008 07:03:53 +0100 Some Effective And Creative Conversation Starters For Dummies http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/conversation-starters http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/conversation-starters Before, I never truly believed in bringing things or items with you as potential conversation starters. Well, well, and what do you know? My friend told me a certain incident which proves to me and that it actually works like magic! My friend actually experienced it first hand. After one visit from the vet she brought along her cute little puppy to the nearby grocery store to do some shopping. She could not believe it when total strangers passed by and stared at them with bright curious smiles and with eyes wide open. Some of them went to the extent of going closer to them just to pat her mixed terrier-poodle. Some comments such as, “is it a she or a he?” and “what a cute and lovable puppy!”. Then, she thought to herself, “Whoah, what a nice way to meet new people!” See, it was so easy not to mention effortless. You don’t have to muster enough guts and courage, risk rejection, withstand weak and wobbly knees and dry mouth just to talk and strike a conversation with anyone for the first time. Then from that time on, my friend thought of being in the right time and place, and having the right props and equipment as conversation starters—then you’re bound to meet new faces along the way and up your social connections several notches higher. This said, here are some tips and hints on what to carry with you and to get that good or great topics of conversation going. You can select some of these conversation starters which you feel really suit your personality the most. 1. Magazines—you can in fact spot and target a person you will like to meet, by bringing with you a magazine which will appeal to his or her likes or interests. Perhaps you want to meet an architect? Then bring Architectural Digest. How bout meeting a stylish fashionista? Then, bring Vogue, InStyle, Harper’s Bazaar or Mademoiselle, etc.-- okay, you get my point. 2. Crossword puzzles—if for example, you’re digging a double tall strawberry frapuccino at a local Starbucks or any coffee shop, you could bring along a crossword puzzle section of the newspaper. And you could ask that cute or attractive person next to your table if he or she knows another 3-letter word for let’s say, “untruth”. If that person answers “egg” please try not to laugh. 3. Sheet music—do you have the hots for a local jazz singer or a musician? Then bring sheet music with you geared to the kind of music maker you have in mind. 4. Books—with striking titles such as “What color is your parachute?” or “The Grass Is Greener Over The Septic Tank” would certainly bring out questions or comments. 5. A camera—go and invite a female pal to the beach. When you see a cutie or anybody that caught your fancy, ask him to take a picture of the two of you, then offer to take his photo also and e-mail it to him. Hmmm...see, you now have his e-mail addy and when you e-mail his picture, you could drop him a line. About the author. Thu, 30 Oct 2008 06:44:38 +0100 Teaching Your Kids The Value Of Self Control http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/self-control http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/self-control A lot of kids tend to be unruly nowadays! And out of control children normally lead parents to feel and become out of control, too! Eventually, everyone ends up being uncontrollable all together. A child with no self control is a pitiful being to behold but when he becomes sick and uncontrollable, not taking good care of him or herself, it could transform beyond such a sorry and pitiful circumstance into a crucial and alarming one. Most often, it is difficult to sort out who loses one’s self control first—the child or the parents. Yet perhaps it truly does not matter where it all started. What is really significant is how to retain and re-establish one’s self control. The following guides or tips might help: 1. Keep in mind that actions speak louder than words. When the parents really need to take control, usually, the quiet yet firm ones who react or respond by doing something turn out much better than the loud and screaming ones that plead, demand, yell or whine. Just recently, I was around a very mischievous kid who annoyingly stuck out his tongue each time his mom or dad wanted to have a group picture with him. Yet, I noticed that he never dared do that for his grandfather. How come—well, when he stuck out his tongue for his mother and father, they cajoled, tickled or told him that it didn’t look nice (which the kid already knew—that’s why he keeps on doing it). However, his grandpa merely removed him numerous times from the group without even uttering a word. It is rarely a matter of what the parents say; it is what they actually do! 2. Share control by providing your child many choices as much as you can. When the kids have some health concerns, they are typically given choices or alternatives, thus, they feel involved and empowered in their medical issues. “Feeling in command” is actually a basic human emotional need. Kids are oftentimes more likely to take responsibility for themselves at a very young age. They generally use negativity, rebellion, and a refusal or resistance to take care of him/herself as a way of gaining authority. Build the odds that your kids will not rebel in their teen years by sharing control early on. 3. Finally decide to share some of the control. If you deliberately give another individual the authority, then, they cannot grab it, and strictly speaking, you and they aren’t out of control. Observe those parents with their kids in public places. You will probably see several parents trying to take hold of the situation that they just can’t. Rather than saying, (for the sixth time), “Stop screaming at the doctor’s clinic!” meanwhile, a clever parent may say, “If you like to be noisy, we could go sit outside but I sure hope that doc does not think we already left!” the word “if” connotes giving up control and offering the child a choice. It could also be utilized to establish consequences and set limitations: “If you drain all my energy with your loudness, I will have not have enough left to take you to Joey’s house later this day.” About the author. This mental manifestation is very essential because it is the precursor to all those physical manifestations that follow and lead to it. So to boost your mental manifestations, you could do or perform numerous physical and mental stuff. The first lesson you have to have to learn is that you must live in the moment-- yes, the precious now. Mon, 29 Sep 2008 07:35:55 +0200 A Beginner’s Introduction To Reiki http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/reiki http://www.innerzine.com/techniques/reiki Reiki is a spiritual training developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in 1922 after he came across the power of Reiki on a retreat in Mount Kurama. Mikao Usui gave birth to the Reiki revolution in Tokyo, leaving it to expand and circulate across the universe to improve and enhance the lives of communities globally by spiritual healing. There are 5 beliefs or theories in this practice called Gokai which are principles that are observed and conformed by most Reiki practitioners and devotees. And these are: do not worry, be grateful, work with integrity, do not be angry, and be kind to other people. It’s widely believed that to help in the evolution of soul and body one must go through this list each and every morning and evening. This practice could also often be confused or mistaken as being a form of religion; nevertheless, it is just a spiritual technique which could be practiced on just about anybody coming from any belief system or background. Reiki is presently performed or practiced by thousands and has received both criticisms and praises along its path and pursuit of healing and development in a spiritual sense. Albeit no scientific proof could attest the positive workings of Reiki, it is still viewed as a safe and natural complementary technique. Okay, so how does it work, exactly? This practice makes use of spiritual energy in order to make a healing effect on body, spirit and mind. When you visit a Reiki professional, you would be instructed to lie down clothed on a massage table and relax. There would be little or no talking involved during the treatment and the practitioner would either hold their hands a few centimeters away from your body or he or she would put his hands on you on different positions. When we have low energy, we tend to become stressed and sick. Energy passes through the hands of the practitioners and helps in the increase of the energy in the affected areas. Approximately, there are 20 positions in Reiki which could be utilized and a complete treatment could last up until 90 minutes in length. A warm sensation in the treated zone as well as a feeling of deep relaxation could be experienced during and after a Reiki session. Inducting self-improvement and spiritual healing, it has been viewed as a positive technique for minimizing stress, relieving side effects and fostering recovery with or without the aid or assistance of medical treatment. However, one must always consult a medical physician before trying to book a session with a practitioner if chronic sickness exists or suspected. Ongoing sessions are normally needed for improved results and it is important to have at least 3 sessions when a chronic illness is being addressed. Reiki must never be identified as a total replacement for medical treatment but instead as a complementary technique to medical treatment. A simple and easy Reiki practice can definitely be worth giving a shot if self improvement and well being are part of your to-do list for the year. About the author.
