Do you constantly find yourself comparing your figure to that of the actresses’ or the svelte supermodels’ onscreen? Well, can’t blame you since today’s generation is unfortunately contributing to the world’s biggest divide, dissatisfaction and frustration in the gap between what we yearn for and what we have. That’s why it’s easy to develop a negative body image.
What is body image? It’s actually the divide between the body and the mind; it’s what we see versus what is truly there. It is also the perspective we have in our psyche about our physical body and this perspective even involves our thinking, emotions, likes and dislikes, judgments and certain outlooks in life.

It’s sad that we live in an odd fallacy that having the perfect beauty would give us the perfect way of life, like wonderful friends, lover, happiness, and fulfillment and so on. Pessimistic mindset definitely turns up in manners and way of thinking when we can’t accept reality like aging process, natural physical attributes, deformities and differences.
Let’s face it--- some of us are infatuated with fashion, youth, comparisons and beauty. There are many aspects which help kick off negative body image. One of the most well-known aspects is the pressure and influence of mass media’s importance on ideal and near-perfect bodies. Then, there’s the mishmash of peer pressure, envy, poor willpower and low self esteem which can produce in distorted body image.
And the most significant factor that contributes to this mindset is that most individuals in our society never really understand and value their bodies—its limitations and maximum capacities for enjoyment. That’s why several people have difficulty appreciating their bodies. Bear in mind that even our natural cycle of life and the human body itself is such a wondrous miracle to behold.
To start developing a healthy body image, simply know and be aware of how it works and be thankful for it with good judgment. We must all cultivate a healthy sense of attitude towards our own physical attributes and a favorable sense of reality. What do I mean by this—understand and value your bodies, love it, and never anticipate it to go after your social needs.
One concrete example: whatever your height is, (whether short or tall—depends on your perception), these realities will never change even you fervently wished to alter it…simply accept it as a fact of life. At best, you can learn to live and appreciate your height for whatever it is. Healthy body image is about not forcing yourself to the things you can’t change.
Now that’s healthy—and normal.
