Essentially, self respect is not about being arrogant or egoistic and trying to be superficial; it's about our inner belief in ourselves knowing that we don't have to feel insecure or trying to be what we're not. It's important for us to develop self respect so that we not only feel comfortable with ourselves, but we could face all those challenges whatever life may bring us. To improve on our self respect: 1) You must learn not to take criticisms personally. We can show self respect if we don't lose it when we know that we're not really excellent in a specific field. We can't win it all, you know. 2) Get real--make your own decisions and you don't need the approval of others, if you know you're not stepping on somebody else's toes. advertisement
Even if others don't respect or approve of your decision, it's still essential that you do. Think about it this way: just because others think you gotta behave/act in a certain way, doesn't mean that they're always right; you got to stand your ground and do your own thing. 3) You don't have to impress them. Though we're constantly barraged by social pressures from others like our friends, families, colleagues, the media etc., it's important to feel comfy in your own skin, and not really trying to impress other people. In addition to this, we must not compare ourselves with others. Why not be happy with other people's success and happiness? It's much lighter that way.
Take note that the success or happiness of others doesn't diminish our self esteem.
