At some point in our lives, we get to encounter some difficult people. And some of them are negative coworkers. Unfortunately, these persons are the ones we deal with almost on a daily basis. As variety is a spice of life, we live in a world of different personalities.
So the question now is, how to deal with negative coworkers?
1) Understand that sometimes your negative coworkers simply wants to grumble and express their sentiments to an accommodating, listening ear. Maybe, they don't really need your advice to address their problem. Listen attentively, but set some limits so that he won't overstay his welcome. You still have many things to do anyway.
2) Avoid them as much as as possible. If you can't help it, bear in mind that you're there to work and not to provide long-term counseling or therapy--unless you're a therapist or coach by profession. advertisement
You can suggest some useful self help books, seminars, or refer them to the Human Resource to resolve their dilemmas/problems.
3) If you have to interact with them, do so only in a professional level and talk about only work-related stuff. In that way, minimizing your discussions with them may lessen the negative energy you might absorb.
Lastly, thank the universe for not being a negative person or coworker to others. Sometimes, certain circumstances may drive a person to be difficult, and not really most of the time; just understand and be patient, for you are not in their situation. Don't let other colleagues' bad mood take you down.
Chances are, it's not about you so don't take it personally. Just do your work well, think that it's all in a day's work.
By the way, I'm releasing my new ebook soon, entitled, The Happy Worker, and there are more tips on how to deal with negative coworkers. You can check it out when it goes live.
