Avoid These Common Body Language Mistakes

Tags: , ,

It's so easy for us to be misunderstood, when people hear us saying stuff but our body language reflects differently. Research shows that effective communication comprises of: only 7% of our actual words, 38% of our voice (pitch, tone, volume, speed) and 55% body language plus eye contact. That's why understanding body language is important co
z you may not know it, you may be sending out the wrong signals to others albeit unintentional.

Here are some of the common body language mistakes to avoid:

1) Keeping your hands clasped together or inside your pockets.

It gives the impression of: you being nervous, not interested, or detached--even though you're not. Remind yourself to remove your hands off your pockets and use them instead for useful hand gestures.

2) Leaning back or slouching.

It gives the impression of: lack of self confidence or you being uninterested to others. Poor posture is not always good to look at, and people may also see you as bored and aloof.

For instant self confidence, chin up and keep your back straight. Want to look more connected and interested? When standing, lean slightly forward and place your feet at shoulder width.

3) Trying to avoid eye contact.

It gives the impression of: aloofness, lack of self confidence, being unprepared, being ill at ease. The solution? If you're speaking before an audience, spend more time looking at your listeners especially into their eyes.

In a conversation, stop yourself from glancing down at your feet or looking somewhere else but the one you're talking to.

If you want to deliver a message, then show them what you've got and maintain an eye contact. In the end, though you may feel nervous, you got to fake it till you make it!
